Girlie has her Puppies

02-11-04
I first noticed that my dog was in labor around 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 11, 2004. Here are a few notes that I took:

10:39 p.m. Contractions

10:42 pm. Dog is pulling on a towel and scratching it with her feet.

10:46 Contraction. Dog is squatting. I rubbed her belly and she lay on her back. 10:50 contraction over

10:51 Dog vomits and then eats it

10:52 Dog licks her bottom then remains sitting in a squatting position.

10:54 Dog lays down on side

10:56 Dog stands up and begins to scratch her towel with her front paws

10:58 Contractions. Dog is lying down. I rubbed her belly.

I noted that the puppies were still high within my dog's abdomen and needed to "drop" before any real activity would take place, so I talked to my cousin for an hour. At 11:50, I noted that the puppies still had not dropped. The dog was continuing to have contractions every 10 minutes. They lasted up to 4 minutes each.

I rubbed my dog's belly and head and decided that I was sleepy. So I wrapped the dog in towels and took her to bed with me. I made her lay in front of me, and I lay on my side. I held the dog's stomach with one hand, so if she moved, I would wake up.

The dog moved a few times, but she stayed where I wanted her.

At 1:50 a.m. I awoke to a very foul smell. About a foot from my head was a puppy attached to a yellowish, white umbellical cord and something that looked like liver with a yellowish, white mucous lining. My dog licked the puppy and chewed on the umbellical cord. The smell was horrible, and I found myself almost gagging. Then she ate the placenta.

At 2:00 a.m., I brought the puppy and her baby into the living room and put them in the play pen. I noted that the puppy was a girl.

An extra note for those of you who have yorkies. These dogs burp very loudly, and my dog keep burping tonight.

At 2:05 a.m., I took the first pictures of the mom and her first baby from this litter:

2:50 a.m. Puppy number 2 literally shoots out! It's a boy!!

Here, Girlie is licking him to get the mucous lining off of him.

In this photo, you can see that his umbelical cord is still attached and inside my dog. The placenta hasn't been born yet.

3:30 a.m. Pup 2 is doing well. He is cleaned up and rooting around with his sister. I just checked my dog, and I feel at least one more puppy in her. It kind of feels like there are two, but it could just be the way the puppy is positioned. So, now I have to wait and see what happens next.

02-12-04....later that day
I got some sleep but kept setting my alarm clock for every 40 minutes to check on the dog. I didn't realize until after I finally got some sleep that I was feeling Girlie's intestines and not a puppy. She only gave birth to 2. Today I took them to the vet and had their tails docked and their dew claws removed. Girlie is a good mom. I put her in my shopping cart to walk the 9 blocks to the vet. There's another vet only a few blocks away, but they refused to cut a puppy's tail off. We also did some other shopping, and people would hear the pups making noises and look in my cart. We drew a few crowds - especially mothers with little children that wanted to see the puppies. Girlie was "beaming" and wanting people to pat her on the head.

The pups are doing well. They are so sweet. Here is a photo of Girlie and her pups and then a photo of their playpen.

Here are two new pics of the puppies. They crawled away before I could get their faces. This was tough to take! Oh well...better pics will come...

02-15-04 Today the puppies' father came to visit his babies. He was afraid to get near them. (Girlie threw a fit, so I don't blame him.) I wouldn't want a mad momma after me, either! Here's a pic of the father:

Here's a pic of the puppies from today.

This is the pup we may keep. Z is calling her "Emmy." (Dragontails fan here. He calls the boy Max.)

Here are close ups of their faces:

Here are two pics to show how much they've grown and one pic of them napping with their mom. I weighed them at the post office today. The girl weighs 10.9 ounces, and the boy weighs 9.8 ounces.

Here, the boy is eating, and the girl is sleeping:

The Pups at 2 weeks old

The girl got her eyes open when she was one week and 4 days old. The boy's eyes began to open the next day and were fully opened the day he turned two weeks old. The girl weighs 19.3 ounces, and the boy weighs 17 ounces.

Here are two pics of the girl.
